In order to protect the crowns and tender shoots in the spring it most advantageous to leave the frost killed fronds on the plant over winter. These old fronds can be removed when the new fronds reach 6 inches tall. If division is essential, choose to do it in the spring to achieve the best results. Plant in a woodland setting, or make sure the plant gets enough water.
